The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has urged security agencies to ensure the “careful, clinical and timely” rescue of students and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
He made the call while reacting to the attack on three schools in the area, where armed men reportedly abducted pupils and teachers during a coordinated raid.
The Speaker commended the immediate response of the Inspector-General of Police and the deployment of security personnel for rescue operations, but stressed the need for speed, precision, and restraint to ensure the safe return of the victims.
He also condemned the attack, describing it as unacceptable, and insisted that those responsible must be brought to justice without delay.
Reports indicate that gunmen invaded Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School; and L.A. Primary School, Esiele, abducting several students and teachers in the process.
According to Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, seven students were taken from Community Grammar School, while 18 pupils and seven teachers were abducted from the Baptist primary school. One person was killed during the attack.
The victims later included a mathematics teacher, identified as Michael Oyedokun, who was killed by the attackers.
Speaker Abbas expressed deep concern over the incident, noting that it comes at a time when Nigeria is struggling to reduce its large population of out-of-school children.
He emphasised that schools should remain among the safest environments in the country and called for stronger protection of educational institutions and other vulnerable public spaces.
The Speaker also extended sympathy to the families of the victims and expressed hope for their safe and swift rescue.
