The United States has issued a stern warning to international students, particularly Nigerians, on the consequences of violating the terms of their student visas.
In a statement released via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, the US Mission in Nigeria emphasized that students who drop out, skip classes, or abandon their academic programmes without informing their schools risk having their student visas revoked.
“If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your programmes of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future US visas,” the mission warned.
The advisory comes amid growing concerns about student visa misuse and follows previous alerts urging visa holders to comply with US immigration rules. The mission advised all student visa holders to strictly adhere to the terms of their visas and maintain their academic status to avoid legal or immigration challenges.
“Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues,” it added.
Broader Context
This latest advisory follows similar warnings by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), which cautioned Nigerians against abusing foreign visas, particularly for education and tourism. Meanwhile, over 300 Nigerian students have recently raised concerns about delays in US student visa processing, sparking frustration among prospective scholars.
The US student visa policy requires holders to remain enrolled in their academic programmes, report any changes to their designated school officials, and avoid engaging in unauthorized employment.
Failure to comply can not only result in immediate visa cancellation, but also jeopardize future eligibility for any US visa, including tourist or work visas.
The US remains a top destination for Nigerian students, with thousands enrolling in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across American universities each year. Authorities continue to urge applicants and current students to stay informed about visa conditions and maintain full compliance to protect their immigration status.
