President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Sanae Takaichi on her historic emergence as Japan’s first female Prime Minister, describing the development as a milestone achievement that underscores her enduring influence and service in Japanese politics.
Takaichi, a veteran lawmaker and former Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications, was elected after securing majority support in Japan’s parliament breaking a decades-long gender barrier in the leadership of the world’s fourth-largest economy.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu lauded the new Japanese leader’s ascent as “a remarkable expression of the confidence reposed in her by the people of Japan.”
In a personally signed letter, Tinubu extended warm congratulations on behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, noting that Takaichi’s victory reflected both her political experience and the trust earned through years of public service.
“Your victory as the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party and ultimately as the Prime Minister of Japan constitutes a remarkable expression of the confidence reposed in you by the good people of Japan,” Tinubu wrote.
“Your election as the first female Prime Minister of Japan is also a testament to the decades of your tremendous contributions to the growth of your political party and governance in Japan.”
The Nigerian President reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Nigeria-Japan diplomatic, economic, and strategic relations, expressing optimism that both nations would deepen cooperation under Takaichi’s leadership.
“As you assume this mandate, you can rest assured of Nigeria’s continued goodwill and support for Japan,” Tinubu added. “Nigeria and Japan have maintained a deep, productive, and strategic relationship over the years. I am confident that we would work together to build on this foundation and further strengthen our bilateral ties.”
He concluded by wishing the new Prime Minister a successful tenure and expressing hope for an early meeting to explore new areas of collaboration.
“I am reassured that Nigeria–Japan relations will continue to blossom under your capable and visionary leadership,” Tinubu said. “Please accept the assurances of my highest esteem and best wishes for your good health and personal well-being.”
